toot goes live: the end of media as we know it!

toot home page

On 1/1/2006, we flipped the switch and the toot home page went live. I just want to say that I am really excited to be involved in a startup again. Building a new company from scratch has such an energizing vibe to it :) And working with a great team of people makes things even more fun (Thank you Mazen, Karim, George, Wael, Jad, Roba)

We started toot a few months ago with a bunch of ideas, all revolving around the emerging concept of self publishing and the power of the web to connect people in meaningful communities. We’re doing this despite the fact that we grew up in this region hearing the phrase: “Arabs don’t read”. They don’t READ? Then how about starting a site around the concept of people who WRITE??! We must be crazy!

I really don’t know where this experiment with our ‘pre-alpha’ will take us precisely. But we do feel that the Arab internet is finally reaching a stage where new concepts and ventures become possible. Others are already doing new stuff (just think that in Jordan alone four blogging services where started in the space of a few months). The whole point of the experiment is to connect with you… What shall I call you? The audience? No! That’s so ‘old media’. We believe that the audience is the author! It’s the end of media as we know it :)

Have a look... And tell us what you think!
