Amman's new bus shelters

A couple of weeks ago, as I was driving up from Ras AL Ein to the the 3rd Circle, I noticed something interesting on the street. Apparently this is the first prototype of Amman’s new bus shelters. I stopped the car, then waited (quite a bit) for the two ladies sitting there to get on the bus, to take a few photos.

The prototype is pretty impressive and solid. From what I understand, this bus shelter (or variations of it) along with new Mupi advertising boards, trash cans and benches will be rolled out city-wide in the coming months, as part of the city’s street furniture upgrade effort.

The company who won the tender to do this is Seagulls, who already are very active in the Jordanian billboard market (as well as in radio and publishing). I found a visual representation of the Amman street furniture system along with a press release on Seagulls’ site.

I also noticed one installed example of the Mupi picture above at the end of Mecca Street, just before the new big roundabout (Medical City Road), but didn’t have a chance to take a photo.

Just in case you don’t take notice of such stuff, here is reminder of how bus shelter look in Amman today!

This is wonderful news, We are moving to a better looking and modern city, What’s left is the people to actually take care of these new services.

Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a Ramadan Kareem!

Interesting … nice typography :D (font used ??)

looks nice (the no no word in design :P ) and suitable for amman

the only 2 things im worried about are:
    1. bench capacity.
    2. map design (any closeups avaiable). I hope it’s as user friendly and understandable as the famous european metro maps :D

Your newly active fellow graphic designer,

    Ali: let’s hope so!
Yousef: the font used, I am delighted to say, is the new Amman font, developed at SYNTAX by a ‘rising star’ of type, Jan Gerner (in close collaboration with a couple of of people at our office). I tested the bench. It is strong. As for the map, it is just a low res mockup. But I am hoping that the new transport people at GAM actually ‘understand’ the importance of good maps.

Historian: yes, promising. Now that this is handled by a private company, it will be interesting to see how they respond to vandalism.

Nice. Are we moving to a more reliable bus system with a timetable and all?

Awesome! They look great, modern and very well designed, kudos for Seagulls (the link for the press release is not active btw.)

Just couple of things, I’m wondering if these colors or specific shades of blue and gray are part of the new Amman visual identity or have been chosen randomly, or maybe for other causes?

I’m also concerned about vandalism, I believe it will be a huge challenge for the “private company”, I see lots of glass! And I’m not sure if the glass is a good idea.

i like it. i wonder where is the bus stop number though? And i’m not sure about the placement of the plaque on the shed – the people waiting could go far off on the street trying to read it, no? unless its for people on opposite sides of the road and bus passengers.

Looks very nice and modern… Simple and neat, a huge improvement over the old ones…

My only concern is the bench, which doesn’t look too comfortable to sit on, and could have been a bit wider to make room for more people. I’m guessing this one takes a max of 4 people.

    Thanks for sharing :)

It’s so refreshing to see the new bus shelters around Amman.

It gives the city a minimalist aesthetics at best!

I just checked Seagulls’ website http://www.seagullscommunications.com. It’s really worth taking a look at and getting to know the company as well.

Kudos to Mr. Hussein Khader and GAM for this wonderful vision!

It looks so refreshing and lovely to have these bus shelters in Amman.

The shelters give the city a minimalist aesthetics at best!

I just checked the Seagulls website http://www.seagullscommunications.com. I suggest taking a look at and getting to know the company behind this. They have other products to be noted as well.

Kudos to Mr. Hussein Khader and GAM for this wonderful vision!

Huge improvement, very stylish. One concern I have is their positions on the pavements. As most bus stops in Amman are position right at the edge of the street obscuring the pavement and compromising safety. Hope this issue is taken into consideration

Actually the improvement is aesthetic and a little bit functional: with the naming system.

The functional aspect that worked better in the previous prototype was the amount of shade that the side panels provided for those sitting inside. Now you can fry while waiting for the bus (and then would u care about aesthetics that much?)
